Automobile manufacturers from Europe and Japan are definitely headed in the right direction by choosing to bring European-spec subcompact cars to the United States and adding a new market of automobiles to buy for consumers. While models such as the Nissan Vera, Toyota Yaris, and Honda Fit are already in America, the efficiency of these models is still not up to par with models in hybrid line-ups, such as the Toyota Prius. Therefore, foreign manufactures will bring even smaller, yet still very safe subcompacts to the United States, that will achieve nearly the same fuel efficiency as a hybrid for a much better price.
At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Mazda unveiled a new micro-hatchback to its line-up, the Mazda 2. The car is very similar to the Mazda 3 in appearance, except it is much smaller. It appears that it would be a fun peppy little car for the city. The size is very much similar to that of Ford’s new Ford Fiesta hatchback. As a 2011 model, the car will be brought to America in either the third or fourth quarter of 2010.
Furthermore, the showroom of Volkswagon definitely did impress with its newer sleeker version of GTI, and a large line-up of TDI clean diesel cars. The cars VW offers with the extremely fuel-effecient diesel technology are the Golf, Jetta, and Toureg. Not only do the V-dubs get revamped engine options and exterior looks, but the interiors have been redesigned to be almost on par with those of more expensive German cars from Audi and Mercedes. The interior of the GTI was far more refined than that of the Audi A3, its “luxury” rival. Volkswagon also brought a prototype of the possible future Golf that would be streamlined on the outside and have a lightened interior to increase fuel-efficiency. The exciting subcompact VW is bringing to the U.S. is the Polo Bluemotion, which has claimed to obtain an incredible 75 mpg on the highway from its sipping diesel engine.
Lastly, Ford is also hopping on the bandwagon by bringing its European-spec Fiesta to the United States. The Fiesta is also a car that has been in Europe already for a bit of time, so American consumers should be excited that the car will be coming to the U.S. Since, it is similar in size with the Mazda 2, specifications should also be similar. It will have a 1.6L inline-4 with 160 hp and will get 30 mpg in the city and a spectacular 40 mpg on the highway. In addition, the Fiesta makes a statement with its fun and hip exterior that would definitely attract the younger crowd. The first Fiestas will be sold in spring 2010 as a 2011 model. With the hard hit the economy, impacted automobile ma are nufacturers definitely taking steps in the right direction by bringing these new cars to the United States and opening up new markets.
