With the cream of Ireland’s rally drivers and top UK drivers taking part in the event as it is a qualifier for the British Rally Championship, the excitement and trills of the rally I think can be enjoyed equally by the die hard rally fans and the fair weather day-tripper.
This year’s Ulster Rally will see clashes between the British championship leader Mark Higgins and Ireland’s Keith Cronin. Cronin almost beat Higgins last time out so Higgins may want to use this stage of the championship to impose this right to the championship crown.  Other Ulster Rally hopefuls include the Welshman Gwyndaf Evans and the Scot David Bogie. All four nations are vying for top position which promises to provide something to cheer for.
The rally this year takes place across Antrim and Mid-Ulster with 127 miles of differing road conditions spanning 14 stages. The rally organisers expect around 150 entrants in the various categories with the calibre of drivers on the Irish roads for the rally promising to make it a spectacular visual feast for the enthusiast and casual spectator alike.
For the car enthusiast Bogle will perform in his Mitsubishi Evo 10 and locals Mark Donnelly from Omagh in a Ford Fiesta ST and Strabane man Pat Kirk in an Evo 9. Cookstown man John McGlaughlin hopes to do well not just in the championship but also in the Evo challenge.
As well as competing in the British championship round contestants will vie for the Mitsubishi Evo challenge, the Ford Fiesta ST series, the UK Citroen C2 cup and the Suzuki Swift cup.Â
So is it just for rally fans? Well no — with so many cars and so many different competitions and the calibre of drivers it promises to be a spectacular show for all the 10,000 people expected to enjoy the entertainment of the Ulster Rally.
