Midsize Suvs
The midsize sport-utility vehicle (“SUV”) class offers consumers a wide variety of models to choose from. From the off-road capabilities of Jeeps, to the sleek styling of Nissan Murano, to the luxury of the all-new Volvo XC-60, this segment has a lot of diversity.
Midsize SUVs offer more power and space than their compact counterparts at a higher price. Prices in this segment typically range from about $22,000 to $40,000 depending on the make, model, and selected options. These vehicles typically offer seating for five passengers but some have third row seating, accommodating up to seven passengers.
V-6 engines typically power Midsize SUVs. Gas mileage for this class is typically between 17 and 21 miles per hour. The Toyota Highlander is offered with a hybrid engine that averages twenty-seven miles per gallon in city driving.
New 2010 SUV models in the midsize class include the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Ford Edge, Dodge Nitro, Ford Explorer, Mercury Mountaineer, Hyundai Santa Fe, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty, Kia Sorento, Mazda CX-7, Nissan Murano, Nissan Pathfinder, Nissan Xterra, Subaru Tribeca, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Highlander, and Toyota Venza. The Saturn Outlook, Pontiac Torrent and Hummer H3 are also models for 2010 but General Motors has announced plans to discontinue selling these brands by the end of 2010. This may create deep discounts for these models.
It can be difficult to classify some models as mid-size SUV as the lines between different SUV types are often blurred. For example, the Acura MDX, Acura ZDX, BMW X3, Cadillac SRX, Volkswagen Touraeg and Volvo XC-60 may fall in either the midsize or luxury SUV class. Another model not always includes in this class is the Subaru Outback, which was named Motor Trend’s 2010 Sport Utility Vehicle of the year. While many associate the Outback as being a station wagon, it has grown in size and is now actually has more passenger and cargo space than some midsize SUV models.
